GIS Technician

Summary

Erwin Utilities, Erwin, Tennessee, a municipal electric, water, and wastewater system located in northeast Tennessee, is seeking a GIS Technician.

GIS Technicians make maps, GPS utility facilities, and manipulate data to serve a variety of purposes.  They read and interpret maps, manipulate and understand digital land data, and manage data entered into a GIS database.

Education

Persons of interests should have at least an Associate Degree in GIS, Geography, or a related field.  It is preferred that the candidate would have a Bachelor of Science in Geography, Computer Science, or Engineering.  Typical courses in these programs include GIS, geography, geosystems, historical geography, and computer.

Experience

Experience using ESRI software is highly preferred.  ESRI software used by Erwin Utilies includes ArcGIS Server (including SDE), ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS mobile apps.  Experience using and understanding WindMilMap/Milsoft is desired.  Previous experience working with GIS in a public utility setting is highly desired.

Skill Requirements

GIS Technicians must have good attention to detail in order to maintain and enter data in a GIS database.  They also need to have superb written and oral communication skills for creating and presenting data reports, training other people how to use GIS technology, and may need to work on GIS programming.

  • Ability to work independently on projects in a timely manner
  • Strong mathematical, organizational, and reasoning skills
  • Valid Tennessee driver license
  • Performs any other duties as requested.
