Sewer Rehabilitation Project

Erwin Utilities’ contractors and crews are currently working on sewer rehabilitation projects. Sanitary sewer rehabilitation is critical to maintaining our sewer system and improves our ability to collect and treat sewer from our customers’ homes and businesses.

During this time, there will be traffic controls in place while crews work. Please plan accordingly, use caution, and expect delays. Contractors may also need to access sewer lines and manholes located on private property.

SEWER SMOKE TESTING

During the testing, non-toxic, non-staining white smoke will be blown into parts of the sewer system. The smoke will appear from manholes, vent pipes on buildings, and other ground openings. The smoke is harmless, does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate within a few minutes.

Please note:

• If you see smoke in your neighborhood during testing hours, do not be alarmed.

• There is no need to call the Fire or Police Department if you see this smoke outdoors.

• The smoke should not enter your home or business unless there is a defective plumbing trap or dry drain.

To help prevent this, please put water into seldom-used sinks, floor drains, and tubs prior to test. If you notice smoke inside your building, open doors and windows to ventilate.
