Unlike typical “guest” WiFi networks, SmartTown’s Community WiFi is built with security in mind. Every connection is protected with end-to-end encryption, which means your data is securely wrapped from your device all the way to the internet. This keeps your information safe from prying eyes, giving you the confidence to browse, work, and connect — just like you would at home.

About SmartTown
What is SmartTown?
SmartTown is a new service that provides secure Wi-Fi across a community…a “Smart Town”. It is safe, secure and easy to use. SmartTown service gives our customers the ability to stay connected where there is no or limited cellular/mobile coverage. Erwin is proud to provide SmartTown to the communities we serve.
How does SmartTown work?
Erwin is building Wi-Fi hotspots in public spaces through the community. In addition, Erwin is leveraging subscriber’s GigaSpire systems to support the SmartTown Wi-Fi network, which enable customers to roam around town. Residential GigaSpire subscribers have been invited to join the SmartTown Customer community. At local events, visitors can scan a QR code or use the captive portal to access SmartTown Wi-Fi.
How is SmartTown different than my Wi-Fi at home?
It’s not different. When you are at home, your network is providing the Wi-Fi. With SmartTown, the Wi-Fi is provided by the public and Erwin hotspots. Just like your home Wi-Fi network, SmartTown is safe, secure and private.
How is SmartTown different than other public Wi-Fi?
SmartTown is more protected and more secure than an open public Wi-Fi you might get at a coffee shop. Passpoint is used to authenticate SmartTown users. Passpoint is a Wi-Fi industry standard that provides encryption which helps prevent cyber-attacks. SmartTown is also secured with ProtectIQ and ExperienceIQ, utilizing the latest network security and content filtering to provide a private, secure, and safe experience.
Why should I use SmartTown?
With SmartTown, the Wi-Fi you enjoy at home will go beyond your front door! You can stay connected anywhere we provide hotspots, like downtown, parks, event venues, and in your neighborhood. SmartTown is safe, secure and private.
How do I connect to SmartTown?
You will receive 2 emails from smarttownwifi.com inviting you to join a SmartTown community:
- The first email (from onboarding@smarttownwifi.com) will help you create a password
- The second email (from welcome@smarttownwifi.com) will provide a link and walk you through the steps to download and install a Passpoint profile on your devices
Once you install Passpoint, you will automatically connect to the hotspots that are part of your SmartTown community!
Addressing General Concerns
How do I know my personal/business data is safe if others are using my home/ business router?
Your concerns about privacy and security are completely understandable. Please be assured that we are using a separate connection for SmartTown Wi-Fi. This means SmartTown is completely segregated from your personal/business network. SmartTown users cannot access or see your private data.
I pay for a certain speed of internet and I don’t want my service slowed down. Will sharing my connection make my internet slower?
You will enjoy your internet speed as you always do. Bandwidth for SmartTown Wi-Fi is separately allocated and will not affect your home/business internet. Our bandwidth management ensures your internet experience remains consistent and prioritized.
What if someone uses this community Wi-Fi for something Illegal? I don’t want to be involved in anything like that.
We share your concerns about misuse. To address this, all activities on SmartTown Wi-Fi are logged and closely monitored. Usage policies also deter misuse, and any issues can be traced back to the user responsible.
Will I pay more because of this extra data usage?
You won’t see any changes to your bill due to SmartTown. The data used by SmartTown is separate and doesn’t count towards your own usage. You won’t be charged any additional cost for this service. This is a value added service for New Visions residential customers with our middle and upper tier packages.
What if there is a problem with SmartTown Wi-Fi? I don’t want to be the one who has to fix it.
You won’t need to deal with any technical issues related to SmartTown. Our dedicated support team will handle all technical matters. If there is ever a problem, you can just contact us.
Am I responsible for what others do on this network?
Rest assured, you won’t be held liable for what others do on the SmartTown network. Legal responsibility rests with the individual users and us, the service provider, not with you, the customer.
I've heard having too many devices connected can cause interference. I don’t want my own network to be disrupted by this.
We’ve ensured that the SmartTown network operates with a separate network configuration, so it won’t interfere with your own network. You should experience no disruptions or slowdown due to others using SmartTown Wi-Fi.
I don't want my router included in the SmartTown network.
We strongly encourage you to support this community initiative. However, if you do not want your router to be used for SmartTown Community Wi-Fi, we can remove your router from the SmartTown network. You will still be able to enjoy the benefits of SmartTown.
